Historically, a hot, controversial topic everywhere you go is the subject of abortion.  Media talks about it a great deal- especially with the recent charges brought up against Planned Parenthood.  Politicians skirt around the issue, and generally try to decide what stance will catapult them into office, or what the popular consensus is among the people.  Yet the one place that should be the most vocal about the truth of the matter remains silent on the subject- the church- leaving many Christians unsure of what God says about the subject and why.  The result is that many Christians accept what they are taught in school and society’s view on the subject.  The danger is that society often has it wrong biblically.

There is an overwhelming population, both politically and in society, that are pro-choice.  Pro-choice says that a woman has a right to decide what to do with her body.  In theory, it sounds good that we are empowering women to make choices that benefit them and not unduly put emotional strain on a woman carrying an unwanted pregnancy.  It sounds like the right thing to do.  However, scripture says, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

This brings up two trains of thought:

Our bodies were bought with a price with was the death and resurrection of Christ.  We are to present our bodies as a holy, living sacrifice to God.  Scripture does not say that our bodies are our own, and that we can do whatever we want with them.  In fact, scripture warns against gluttony, which is not just the sin of overeating, but encompasses anything that we put into our body that is excessive and can harm us.  Gluttony makes an idol into whatever we are excessively putting into our bodies whether it’s drugs, food, etc. and creates a bondage.  In short, it hurts our “temple”.

But gluttony is not pregnancy, you say?

True, but it is an example of how your body is not your own.  The Bible also forbids tattoos (Leviticus 19:28) and anything that destroys the body.  Abortion is destroying a body, and even though the body is not yours, it does have a soul.  Those that support abortion see the body from a scientific perspective- that it is a mass of cells, nothing more.  They believe that a life begins when we are born.  However, scripture disagrees with this statement.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”Jeremiah 1:5

“It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.” 1 Corinthians 15:44

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!” Psalm 139:13-18

Scripture clearly states that life begins at conception, not at birth.  It is at conception when our body is being physically formed, whether is it through the division of cells, or at the point when we can actually see features through ultrasound.  Science agrees that a body is being formed, and therefore, according to scripture, that body has a spirit.

Scripture says that God knows us while we are being formed in our mother’s womb.  He has plans for us for His kingdom.  When we choose to abort a baby, we are eliminating something that God clearly had a plan and purpose for.  Even though the timing may not have been His, He still had a plan for that living being.  To put it in perspective, if you knew the child that you were carrying would change the world, and would truly make a significant impact for the good, would you abort it just because the timing wasn’t right?  In this little body, God has already mapped out their life, and now it is being ended with a few cuts of a surgical instrument.  It’s life has ended.  It’s destiny cannot be fulfilled.

The second is that we are to keep our bodies a holy sacrifice to God and keep it pure.  Scripture is very clear on premarital sex, which is often the cause of unwanted pregnancy.  Abortion, in many cases, is used as a method of birth control.  The Bible calls premarital sex as defiling the body and has consequences both physically, with an unwanted pregnancy, and spiritually with soul ties.

There is a spiritual connection that is made when we have sex, and when we have sex with other partners, we are creating spiritual ties with multiple people.  This is why so many people are messed up and have garbage in relationships is because of those soul ties which need to be severed.  As long as they exist, there is a part of you that is still tied to that individual.

Having sex outside of marriage isn’t keeping your body holy- a body, may I remind you that is not your own.  You are defiling it with your actions, and it does have consequences.  This message is not to condemn you, but to point out God’s truth on the subject so that you can live a holy life and learn the consequences of your decision.  The truth isn’t meant to hurt or condemn you- that’s Satan’s job- but for you to free yourself from activities that have serious consequences both physically and spiritually.  For God, no pregnancy is unwanted- God wants all of His children.  It has become our decision as to whether we keep or terminate a pregnancy.  However, our thoughts have been tainted by the world, and when we choose to end a pregnancy, we are deciding whether something lives or not, which should be reserved only for God.

In the next part, we will discuss the flip side of abortion: when pregnancy arises from forced sexual encounters, and what women can do when faced with an unwanted pregnancy can do biblically.  Also, if you have had an abortion, please know that God still loves you- He hasn’t stopped.  Do not carry the burden of hurt with you.  He can heal you, all you need to do is ask and He can make you whole.  If this is the case, please repeat the following prayer:

“Heavenly Father, I come to you and ask for your forgiveness for having an abortion.  Please remove the pain in my heart and heal me, Lord.  Make me whole again and let me feel your ever present love for me.  In Jesus name, Amen.”

God is just to forgive you, and remember the sin no more.  So please, let go of it.  If He doesn’t remember and has forgiven you, then you need to forgive yourself.  This is where true healing begins.
