Is the solution gun control or something else?
With the growing fear of whether the school down the street or the church in the next town over or the next city wide event will be the target of terrible violent acts, our government wants to pinpoint the blame; guns! There is without a shadow of a doubt a glaring problem in our country that is staring us in the face but I find little evidence that it is guns that we are battling. We have to keep in mind that those that are committing these crimes are in fact criminals and most of them in need of psychiatric help.
Tightening gun laws will not be the long term solution to the problem that America faces. The 2013 National Crime Victimize Survey reported that there were almost exactly 300,000 crimes, including murders, facilitated with a firearm and of those, not more than 5,000 can be shown to have been committed with a firearm legally purchased by the offender. If our studies prove true, then tighter gun laws will only be hurting those that own guns in order to protect themselves, not those that are determined to commit a crime because the very core of who they are is hardened toward the very sanctity of life.
Our problem isn’t guns; our problem is where are hearts are as a nation. President Obama gave a speech in Paris stating that gun violence was unique to the United States just over a week after they experienced a mass shooting right in their back yard! What message did he send to those hurting people, what message did he send to the American people? Our administration wants the problem to be guns because then we wouldn’t have to face the greatest problem of all. America has turned away from the biblical foundation and moral principles that our forefathers founded it upon! We have strayed away from everything that is true, right and noble.
Our Two Cents:
2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land”. While this passage is talking about the people of Israel in the Old Testament, I believe that every part of scripture is God-breathed and can be applied to our lives today. When Jesus came as the ultimate sacrifice, offering grace, forgiveness and salvation to the Gentiles (those that were not Jew), I believe that this passage became ours to claim and hold onto.
There is a massive irony that stares the American people in the face; our current administration is the biggest supporter of Planned Parenthood that we have ever seen grace the White House and if we truly want to be a people that values life on all levels then we have to face the stark reality that guns are not killing the masses, abortion is! On average, there are 1,058,490 abortions performed every year in the United States. Now tell me, why would we ban guns that protect millions of lives per year but we won’t ban a practice that takes millions of lives per year?
Our Heavenly father, keep our country in your prayers, we need you back in our schools and government. We pray for safety of your children and we pray that those who do not know you will find the way to a loving and forgiving father. In your name we pray. Amen
