Evangelical leader Dr. Jeff Myers is urgently calling on Christians (no matter who they voted for) to get in the fight for election justice. Dr. Jeff Myers is president of Summit Ministries. As an educator and entrepreneur, Dr. Myers has become one of America’s most respected authorities on youth leadership development. Focus on the Family founder James Dobson referred to him as “a very gifted and inspirational leader.” Evangelist Josh McDowell called him “a man who is 100% sold out to preparing the next generation to reflect the character of Christ in the culture.”
Through his speaking engagements and media appearances Dr. Myers has become a fresh voice offering humor and insight from a Christian worldview. He is the author of 14 books, including Understanding the Faith, Understanding the Times, and Understanding the Culture textbooks which are studied by tens of thousands of students. Dr. Myers holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Denver. He continues to engage college students and adult learners by serving as a trustee of Colorado Christian University and through a Signature Leadership Course offered by the Lumerit Corporation, which serves the training needs of many Fortune 100 companies. Jeff and his wife Stephanie and their family live in Colorado.
In a just-published OpEd, Myers says the faithful are “asleep at the wheel” and exercising “bad citizenship” and “even worse theology.”
Faith Filled Family Magazine is thrilled to present this interview with Dr. Jeff Myers as he gives readers an inside look at his opinion on 2020 election justice.
Faith Filled Family Magazine: Why do you think many Christians are confused about their biblical obligations in this current election cycle?
Dr. Jeff Myers: “In times past, Christians avoided politics because it seemed worldly. Now, Christians are voting in unprecedented numbers but quickly turning their attention elsewhere when the election is over. Voting does not get you across the finish line; it gets you to the starting line.”
Standing Up for Justice
Faith Filled Family Magazine: How has the biblical concept of standing for righteousness and justice become lost in certain areas of the church?
Dr. Jeff Myers: “Churches want to win the lost. They don’t want to do anything that might turn people off. Unfortunately, this leads them to tiptoe through tough issues such as voting for biblical values and fighting for election integrity.”
Faith Filled Family Magazine: Survey research shows that young evangelicals are straying far away from a biblical worldview— right this moment can we afford an opportunity to show them through our actions what Biblical behavior looks like?
Dr. Jeff Myers: “Now is the time to teach a robust view of loving our neighbor. Not just by saying hello or taking them cookies, but by standing for justice. Right now, in the aftermath of the elections I believe that means ensuring the integrity of our voting system. Election integrity is a justice issue. Eighty percent of Americans say they do not trust the federal government to do the right thing. This can’t be fixed by people from the media mocking them for their distrust. It has to be fixed by active citizens that hold government publicly accountable.”
Faith Filled Family Magazine: How has our society become one in which everyone feels they can express their own personal opinion rather than driving their opinion from core foundational principles?
Dr. Jeff Myers: “Sixty-nine percent of young adults who regularly attend church believe that there are no absolute truths. They are their own truth. So rather than look to history or logic, they look to their own feelings to decide what is right and wrong. Many develop a hair-trigger temper about it—“How dare you question my truth!”
Faith Filled Family Magazine: What is one thing you’d like every Christian to do right now in America?
Dr. Jeff Myers: “Now is a time for national prayer and fasting, not just for the outcome of the election, but for people to stand for truth and oppose lies.”
Faith Filled Family Magazine: What can we do to bring the election this year and future elections back to God/ a biblical worldview?
Dr. Jeff Myers: “Inform yourself through organizations that work to ensure that every legal vote counts and no illegal ones do. Contact your local elected officials and share with them that you are very concerned about the issue of election integrity. Don’t settle for easy answers.”
Faith Filled Family Magazine: What can we do to bring this world back to biblical worldviews?
Dr. Jeff Myers: “Believers need to be informed about the difference between a biblical worldview and other worldviews such as Marxism that influence our society today. Marxists use words like “justice”, but they don’t mean rights that come from God. They mean having a revolution and taking over. Our resources at Summit.Org can help you compare the truth to popular falsehoods and know how to explain it to others.”
Faith Filled Family Magazine would like to thank Dr. Jeff Myers for giving us an inside look at his views on the 2020 election. We would also like to thank Jeff Myers publicist Matthew Faraci for facilitating this interview. We hope that this interview gives readers a good idea as to how to approach this and other elections.
