The Wood Drake Sessions Brings A New Sound To Christian Music

The Wood Drake Sessions is a new songwriting collaboration which was born at the onset of the pandemic.  The main collaborators are Paul and Kirk and their music is meant to inspire hope through the lyrics and sound of their music.

Paul Ranheim and Kirk Sauers met in the Nashville songwriting world a few years ago.   They have since left Nashville; Paul has taken a job as a minister/worship pastor in Colorado and Kirk as a worship leader in Georgia.

Their name “The Wood Drake Sessions” derives from the poem written by Wendall Berry’s “The Peace of Wild Things.”  The civil unrest of the riots and the prolonged lockdowns of COVID has brought an uncertainty which is reflected well in the following verse, “When despair for the world grows in me, and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.”  And so the peace of where the wood drake rests is found in the sessions of songwriting for Paul and Kirk.

Review

“Never shakes, Never will,” is the name of their first release and it speaks of the unshakeable mighty fortress of God and the unbreakable rock on which we as Christian’s stand.  The lyrics express what so many of us are feeling through these turbulent times.  “What if my world should fall? What if my world should fall?  When I’m left betrayed or my riches fade and I lose it all?  These are real questions that we are asking ourselves now that we were not asking a mere year ago.  The world is changing so quickly and it seems stability and joy is becoming out of reach.  But the one real stable thing that has always been there is God…and he never shakes, and he never will.

The music has a country pop sound which is one of my favorite genres.  It is uplifting and reminds us to keep our eyes on God. “I lift my eyes to the heavens, I lift my eyes to the hills, My Lord surrounds me like mountains, He never shakes, never shakes, never will.”

So keep looking up..and if you need some help, try this song.  It has helped bring me peace as sometimes a good song can do.
